Sundials can be made in a variety of styles and materials. These include horizontal garden sundials mounted on a plinth, vertical sundials for buildings and garden walls,
multi-sundials with several faces, sundials made from fibreglass,
school playground sundials and miniature sundials.

Each sundial is specially designed for its setting and is calibrated for the specific latitude and longitude of the site so that it will tell accurate time.

There are many exciting colours and textures of stone and slate which can be used for sundials. The carved detail on the sundials can be painted, gilded or left plain.

Cumbrian green slate with
gilded sun and stars.

Riven Caithness slate with gold leaf. Gold-plated gnomon.

Gnomons (shadow-casters) are usually made of brass, bronze or stainless steel. Supporting scrollwork can be shaped to cast an interesting shadow.

Gnomons can be electroplated in gold to glint in the sun, or patinated to give a weathered look.

Sundials can be used to mark special dates such as birthdays.

The path of a shadow can be calculated for a particular day in the year so that on that day it tracks along a curve across the dial face.

Gilded black slate with gold-plated gnomon. On the owner's birthday the curve of dots is tracked by the shadow of a notch on the gnomon.

Favourite poems or mottos can be inscribed on the sundial.
I can supply lists of mottos to choose from.
